My Voice Over Journey: Embracing the Ups, Downs, and New Beginnings

March 20, 2025 by Bob Shaw

For over 25 years, my voice has been my livelihood. As a voice-over artist, I’ve had the privilege of working on countless projects, from radio ads to character voices in animation. It’s been a journey full of passion, growth, and, yes, challenges. And like many, my path has been shaped by unexpected twists and turns, especially during the past few years.

I’ve had the joy of watching my career grow, navigating the highs of landing big gigs and the satisfaction of hearing my voice on air or in projects I hold dear. There’s nothing quite like the moment when you hear something you’ve worked on reach an audience—knowing that your voice helped tell a story or spread a message.

But, like any career, there have been difficult moments. There have been times when the work slowed down, when I questioned if I was doing everything I could to push forward, and when setbacks made me feel unsure of where the next opportunity would come from. Voice-over work, like any industry, can be unpredictable. The ups can feel exhilarating, and the downs, well, can sometimes feel overwhelming.

And then, COVID-19 hit. The pandemic was a seismic shift for many industries, but for voice actors, it changed the game in ways I couldn’t have anticipated. The world was locked down, and studios closed. In-person sessions were put on hold, and as businesses scaled back, many projects were canceled or postponed. It felt like the world stopped turning, and for a while, so did my voice-over career.

It was a hard time for so many of us. The uncertainty was daunting, and the future felt foggy. But looking back, I realize that those months of quiet were a time of reflection. I had to adapt—just like everyone else. I set up a home studio, refined my skills, and learned how to navigate this new remote world of voice-over work. The industry evolved, and so did I.

Through it all, I’m incredibly grateful for my clients. Your support and trust in my voice during these times mean more than I can express. Even when things seemed uncertain, you kept reaching out, giving me the opportunity to do what I love. I’m thankful for your belief in my work and your partnership. You’re the reason I’ve been able to continue this journey, and for that, I can’t thank you enough.

Looking ahead, I’m filled with optimism. The world may have changed, but it hasn’t stopped moving. The voice-over industry is vibrant and full of opportunities, especially as technology evolves and new platforms emerge. I’m excited about the future—about new projects, new collaborations, and the chance to continue growing as an artist. The path ahead is filled with possibility, and I’m ready for it.

To all my fellow voice-over artists: keep pushing through the challenges. The downs are part of the journey, but they don’t define us. The ups are worth it, and they’re coming. To my clients: thank you for being a part of my story. I’m looking forward to what’s next!

Here’s to the next chapter in this journey. The best is yet to come.
